If you perform any of the following trades for hire in Michigan (other than as an employee of a LICENSED CONTRACTOR) then you require a Michigan Builders License.

| Insulation | Masonry |
| Painting, decorating | Roofing |
| Siding | Storms, screens |
| Swimming pools | Tile, marble |
The Residential Builder license does not allow you to do plumbing, electrical, or mechanical work. These licenses require LONG apprenticeship and/or approved classroom study programs to qualify.

NOW is the PERFECT time to get your Builders License in Michigan. There is currently no apprenticeship and/or classroom requirements like the electrical, plumbing, and mechanical trades (THIS MAY SOON CHANGE!). You must be 18 years old to qualify. You do not have to be a Michigan resident to qualify. You must pass BOTH halves of the Michigan Residential Builders License exam before you can qualify. NOW is the time to get "grand fathered" in and just renew your license to remain current.

It costs $105.00 for your first Michigan Residential Builders License. This total amount includes: $50.00 for a once-in-a-lifetime Construction Lien Recovery Fund fee, $15.00 for a once-in-a-lifetime license application fee, and $40.00 for the actual license itself. After that, it costs you only $40.00 a year in renewal fees. There are also fees for the mandatory Residential Builders License Exam which are covered in the "EXAM" webpage that follows.

You CANNOT APPLY FOR YOUR LICENSE until you pass the required examinations.
AFTER YOU PASS both halves of the required examination, you will be given your test score report and license application. Simply read the license application instructions, include required documentation, and mail with your license fees. Your license will be mailed to you.
